Together, we are

ONE WITH
THE RIVER.

One Mississippi is a growing national movement of over 20,000 people and over 70 organizations committed to protecting the future of the Mississippi River.

Our program was founded in 2005 with a mission to protect, strengthen, and restore the Mighty Mississippi as a vital resource for future generations. Together, we join forces to take environmental action and set the bar for sustainability.

Preserving our Future.

Since welcoming North America’s earliest inhabitants, the Mississippi River has been a reliable source of sustenance and transportation. Today, the critical commercial waterway transports around 175 million tons of freight each year, making a significant impact on the global economy. A historical and cultural treasure, the Mississippi River is often referenced in America’s literature, poetry, and music.

2,340 miles of diverse habitats

Flowing from Minnesota’s Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River is revered for its biological abundance. The River and its floodplain support over 400 species of wildlife. The Mississippi’s watershed is the fourth largest in the world – covering 1.2 million square miles – and serves as a migration route for 60% of North America’s birds.

America's
Greatest Natural Landmark

The Mississippi River’s value reaches far beyond its waters. As a commercial shipping corridor for goods and resources, the river makes a significant global economic impact every day. The Mississippi River is also home to countless state parks, historical sites, and scenic overlooks. It’s the heartbeat of a nature-based economy employing 1.5 million workers.

A VOICE
FOR
THE MIGHTY
MISS

Approximately 70 million Americans – over 25% of the nation’s population – live within the Mississippi River basin. One Mississippi advocates for the many River residents who are disproportionately impacted by pollution, public health disparities, and economic injustices – often communities of color.

While the Wetlands Initiative promotes the importance of wetlands in our messaging and restoration efforts, advocacy and influencing public policy are not part of our organization’s core mission. We rely on the organizations and coalitions within the Mississippi River Network, who do this type of work, to lead the charge in supporting and protecting the environmental actions and policies that impact natural infrastructure and floodplain restoration efforts
What I value most about the Network is the opportunity to learn from energetic, committed people who are engaged throughout the Mississippi River corridor on work that contributes directly to the health of the River.
