Protecting the Heart of the Mississippi Flyway: The Threat of Wetland Destruction
At One Mississippi, we know how critical wetlands are for our ecosystems, communities, and culture. The Big Sunflower and Yazoo Rivers, nestled in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, are home to over 450 species of birds, fish, and wildlife. These wetlands provide natural flood protection, support biodiversity, and offer vital climate resilience. But this remarkable place is under threat from the devastating Yazoo Backwater Pumps project.
This project, if carried out, would destroy tens of thousands of acres of wetlands, jeopardizing the delicate balance of life these ecosystems support. Beyond environmental harm, it perpetuates historical environmental and racial injustices, disproportionately impacting predominantly Black, low-income communities in the Yazoo Backwater area.
